I had Under the Poppy on my to read list and in my collection for longer than any other book but happily finally sat down to read it this month. It's a dark, troubling novel with a heavy emphasis on characters saddled with trauma and desperate situations. The writing is evocative and pulls the reader into the world with a dire gravity.
